Jumping is considered one of the most physically demanding movements in basketball and volleyball. It’s also one of the most under tracked. Some wearable systems count jumps. Very few tell you anything meaningful about the intensity of those jumps, and intensity is where the information that actually matters for load management, injury prevention, and performance development lives.

What Banded Jump Tracking Does
PlayerData's Edge Air unit uses its IMU — inertial measurement unit — to detect every jump an athlete makes during a session and classifies them by estimated height into one of three bands: low, medium, or high.
Low jump events are jumps with an estimated height between 5 and 20 centimeters. These are the incidental, low-intensity jumping movements that occur throughout a session — defensive close outs, small position reactions, low-effort tip attempts.
Medium jump events are jumps between 20 and 35 centimeters. These represent moderate effort jumping — contested rebounds, mid-effort layup finishes, transition defensive jumps.
High jump events are jumps above 35 centimeters. These are maximum or near-maximum effort jumps — explosive rim attacks, full-effort blocks, high elevation rebounds. These are the efforts that place the greatest demand on an athlete's body and carry the greatest injury risk on landing.
In addition to the three bands, PlayerData tracks max jump height, the highest single jump achieved in a session, and average jump height across all jumps in a session. Both metrics give coaches and performance staff a clear picture of the intensity profile of a session's jumping demand.
Jump band zones can be configured at the team level to suit specific program requirements, giving programs the flexibility to define thresholds that are most meaningful for their athletes and their system.

Why Jump Intensity Matters for Injury Prevention
Eccentric force can cause tendon-related injuries in basketball: tendonitis and tendinopathy. In basketball and volleyball, a major source of eccentric force is landing. Every time an athlete jumps and absorbs the impact on the way down, the tendon is loaded. The accumulation of that loading across a session, a week, and a season can precede the tendon inflammation that sidelines athletes.
Bigs in basketball are particularly vulnerable. The physical profile of post play — repeated jumping, rebounding, and rim protection with big bodies — creates a landing load that can accumulate faster and with greater force than almost any other position in the sport.
Knowing how many jumps an athlete made is useful. Knowing how many of those jumps were high intensity, and therefore generated the highest landing load, is what makes meaningful load management possible. A program managing a big's pain levels from patellar tendinopathy needs to know not just that they jumped forty times in Tuesday's practice, but what proportion of those were explosive, maximum-effort efforts that placed significant eccentric demand on the inflamed tendon.
Banded jump tracking provides that layer. And for return-to-play protocols specifically, it gives performance staff an objective tool for progressively reintroducing high-intensity jump load rather than relying on time and feel alone.

Why Jump Height Matters for Performance
The injury management application is important. The performance application is equally compelling.
Jumping is a legitimate factor of defensive effectiveness in modern basketball as well. Research consistently shows that shot percentage drops when a shot is meaningfully contested. In the pace-and-space game that defines basketball at every competitive level today, the ability to get a hand within two-feet of the shooter's release point separates programs that hold opponents below their expected shooting percentage and those that do not.
The same principle applies to rebounding and vertical endurance across a full game. An athlete who can sustain their jump height and explosive power into the final minutes of a close game because their jump load has been managed intelligently across the week is a different competitive asset than one whose vertical capacity has been depleted by poorly managed training load.
Banded jump tracking makes that management precise. Programs can see not just whether athletes are jumping enough in training to maintain vertical power but whether the intensity distribution of that jumping is building the explosive capacity that translates to performance at the moments that matter most.
