The Mad Scientist
You don’t make a sub without checking the data first.
Your sideline is a lab and every player is an experiment. You’ve got the PlayerData app open before the whistle and you’ll quote a player’s high-speed distance back to them like it’s scripture. Gut feeling? Cute. You’ve got numbers. The players secretly love that someone’s watching the work.
All of them. You don’t have a favorite metric. You have forty.
The Grinder
We’ll run until the GPS units file a complaint.
Fitness wins matches, and nobody out-works your team. Preseason is a rite of passage and your warmups have made grown athletes question their choices. You’re not mean, you just believe comfort is the enemy. When the high-speed distance numbers come in high, that’s not a warning sign to you. That’s a love language. Train hard so matches are easy.
High-Speed Distance. The higher the better.
The Tactician
The game is chess. You’re already three moves ahead.
Formations, overloads, half-spaces, you speak a language most of the parents will never understand. Your whiteboard has its own whiteboard. You’d rather win 1-0 with a perfect shape than 5-4 with chaos. You check heat maps to make sure everyone held their position, because out of position is a personal insult.
Heat maps, by position, naturally.
The Hype Machine
Energy first. Everything else follows.
You are the loudest, most joyful presence on any touchline. Your pre-match speeches could sell out arenas and your cellies risk a hamstring injury every other week. You believe a confident player is a dangerous player, and you’re usually right. The sprint count spikes after goals, mostly from your players sprinting down the line alongside you.
Sprints. Mostly yours, in celebration.
The Sideline Sage
The game teaches. You just make space for it.
While everyone else is losing their minds, you’re a pocket of calm. You rarely raise your voice because you don’t need to. You trust the process, trust the players, and let the game come to them. You glance at the data, nod quietly, and adjust the cardigan tied over your shoulders. Including the spectators.
Decelerations. You slow everything down, including yourself.
The Throwback
Back in your day, and your day was pretty good.
Salt pills at halftime, strong opinions always. You coached long before anyone strapped a tracker to a teenager, and you’ll tell anyone who listens. But here’s the secret: you checked a player’s top speed once and now you can’t stop. Tradition and tech, turns out, make a pretty good team. Don’t tell anyone you said that.
Top Speed. The one number that won you over.
The Grassroots Legend
Twelve kids, one ball, and a heart of gold.
You coach for the love of it. You know every kid’s name, every sibling, and exactly whose turn it is for snack. Your sessions are gloriously chaotic and nobody, nobody, gets left on the bench. You track metrics so you can give the kids a score to be proud of, since the one on the scoreboard won’t always be uplifting. The top metric that matters most to you: how many of your players come back next season. (All of them.)
Accelerations, mostly toward the snack table.
