SCL College is not a conventional educational institution. Describing itself as "college done different," SCL operates across more than 70 sites throughout the United Kingdom, serving approximately 4,000 students aged 16 to 18. SCL College has a bold ambition for 2026/27, changing the face of performance-based education for the masses.
The organisation's mission is straightforward: unlock your potential through sport. Their Academy vision is redefining learning through innovation, community, and performance. Their SCL Academy blueprint represents a fundamental shift in how they operate, grow, and position themselves in the sport and education sector. And this year, it’s deploying 600 PlayerData GPS units across its academy network in one of the largest grassroots GPS rollouts in UK football history. And this is just the start, as SCL plans to expand its usage of PlayerData into the thousands in the future.
What sets SCL apart is a deliberate ambition to use sport as the vehicle for something bigger. Every athlete dreams of making it big as a player, but the reality is most don’t. SCL recognizes there’s still tremendous value in the pursuit of being your own best in sport. As an educational institution, it combines a world class athlete development experience with different pathways to stay in sport regardless of a player’s ceiling: coaching, teaching, playing, media, marketing, and data. This gives students a route beyond the pitch. Performance Insight Apprentices, graduates of SCL's own programmes, are now working within academies and professional clubs, trained on performance technology and delivering that expertise back to current students. The programme creates a cycle: students become practitioners, practitioners elevate the next generation of students.
This year, PlayerData becomes a central part of that cycle.
Across the SCL academy sites, PlayerData GPS technology will support approximately 1,000 students. The decision to roll out PlayerData follows the conclusion of a rigorous evaluation process in which SCL assessed multiple GPS providers against criteria that went well beyond price.

“We went through an extensive look at the market. Based on accuracy, alignment, and ultimately the partnership, we landed with PlayerData," said Kyle Fedyszyn, Executive Director of Group Marketing and Product at SCL. "We were looking for a challenger mentality, someone that wants to do things differently and that's redefining learning through innovation, community and performance.”
The scale of SCL's operation demanded a platform that could scale with it. Deploying GPS technology across geographically dispersed sites with different coaching structures, groups, and training timetables requires a system that isn’t just technically robust but operationally simple. PlayerData's cloud-based infrastructure and intuitive workflow made that possible.
Ian Dyer, SCL's Head of Academies and a UEFA-licensed coach with over 25 years of professional experience across the Premier League, EFL, and international football, was involved in the evaluation from the beginning. He had previous experience using GPS technology, and knew what good looked like.
"One of the things I was really impressed with was how PlayerData's hardware has evolved. It's so small and comfortable for the players," Dyer said. "And it's great that we're using the same technology as the world's leading professional sports franchises, from Major League Baseball to the EPL."
The GPS data feeds directly into the Kitman Labs® iP: Intelligence Platform, which serves as SCL's centralized data and analytics infrastructure and operating system. Three data streams converge in one place: testing data collected every 12 weeks including 10-metre sprints, 20-metre sprints, 1,000-metre runs, and yo-yo tests; wellness and wellbeing data covering injury, sleep, nutrition, and mental health; and conditioning and training data from PlayerData's GPS units. Together, they form what SCL calls the player passport, a longitudinal record of each student's physical and personal development across their two-year programme.
The ambition extends further. In a second phase, SCL intends to analyze correlations between physical data and academic performance, exploring whether nutrition, sleep quality, and training load have measurable effects on results in subjects like mathematics and English. The data will also support safeguarding, flagging when students may be struggling and enabling timely intervention.
"Our learners deserve the same standard of technology as the professionals they aspire to be, and that's what this partnership gives them. The performance data helps them develop on the pitch, but it also builds a real understanding of analysis and insight - skills that will serve them in whatever career they go into within the game and beyond it," said Adrian Fantham the Chief Financial Officer of SCL.
For PlayerData, the SCL partnership represents something significant. Six hundred units across a single organisation. A data ecosystem built around Kitman Labs’ iP: Intelligence Platform. Students who will spend two years developing their own performance profiles and leave with something most athletes their age have never had: a documented, objective record of their physical development.
"PlayerData was built to give every athlete access to the kind of data that was previously only available at the highest level," said Mat Young, Vice President of Commercial at PlayerData. "SCL is pioneering this space, providing elite performance metrics and education to young people who will make the most of it. We’re excited to continue to grow alongside them and work together as innovation partners."
