Smoothing the Jump: How Brøndby IF Builds Players Through the Academy Pathway

Discover how Brøndby IF uses PlayerData GPS trackers to optimize player load and development from the academy level through their first team.

The hardest moment in a young player’s development isn’t the training session. It’s the jump. Moving from the Under-15s to the 17s, from the 19s to the first team, each step asks the body to absorb more than the last. Players who aren’t ready for that load are the ones who break down, physically or mentally, right when their chance arrives.

Brøndby IF decided data is a powerful tool to solve that problem, and it started where the next generation is made: the academy.

Preparing players before they arrive

For Brøndby, the value of GPS tracking at the youth level is simple. The staff can see exactly what a player’s body is handling, and prepare them for what’s coming next.

“The benefit is that we can follow the players’ load and make the transition from younger to older ages much smoother,” said Taha Nemaei, Head of Academy Performance at Brøndby IF. “We make sure they’re ready to cope with the demands before they step into our environment, from the Under-15s to the 17s and 19s, and then the first team.”

That turns the academy into something more than a talent pipeline. It becomes a place where players are physically built for the level above.

The daily workflow

At Brøndby, the data isn’t a weekly report. It’s part of every session, start to finish.

“We use PlayerData every day, before training, during training, and after,” said Bennet Kästner, the first team Strength & Conditioning Coach. said. “We plan the session, we use it live to evaluate on the pitch, and then we review it afterward to see if we hit our targets. Then we make sure we hit them next time.”

Just as important is the ability to set a threshold for each individual rather than the group.

“We’re not generalizing, we’re individualizing, because one player might be faster than another,” Kästner said. “The live feature and the individual thresholds really matter to us.”

Data they can act on, fast

Brøndby runs its own data department, building custom reports and dashboards from across the club. PlayerData’s API feeds that work in near real time.

“As soon as the coaches segment the training and upload it, we have it in our own system five minutes later,” said Nicolai Pedersen, Brøndby IF’s Head of Football Data Analytics. “It’s almost instant, so we can send training reports to staff and give feedback to players really fast after sessions.”

Underpinning everything is a simple demand: the data has to be trustworthy.

“Quality is the most important thing. It has to be as precise as possible,” said Peder Siggard, Project Manager at Brøndby IF. “It has to be repeatable so we know we can trust it. The units are small, the players like to wear them, and the whole thing is simple to use.”

Earning its way up

Brøndby’s story with PlayerData didn’t start with a top-down mandate. It started in the academy and the women’s team, where the staff came to rely on it, and it grew from there as coaches and players bought in.

“We took a six-month trial to see if the coaches and players took to it, and of course they did,” Siggard said.

That kind of adoption sets a foundation for deep collaboration between the club and PlayerData as the GPS player tracking provider.

“Support is amazing,” Kästner said. “Every time we have a question or an idea for improvement, you listen and take it seriously. A few weeks later, the improvement is in the system. That matters to us.”

For Brøndby IF, it started by unlocking insights with the next generation, who they were previously blind to. The proof came from hands-on experience, and the data earned its place in the highest ranks of the sport.
