In 2010, Nashville Christian School needed an identity, and it went looking for one on the football field.
The Eagles had gone 10 years without a playoff berth and six without a winning season. Head of School Connie Jo Shelton, whose father once coached the team, knew what would drive the narrative in the South. So she hired Jeff Brothers, a Nashville native and former Vanderbilt football player, to rebuild the program from the ground up.
"Football is the front porch of the school," Brothers says. "People see it, and that draws them in. Then you'd better have substance behind it."
He delivered both. The Eagles went 9-3 in his first season. Since then, they've reached the semifinals or finals in 13 of 16 seasons, played in four of the last five state championship games, and won the last two.
A CLASSIC BALL COACH
Brothers coaches the way he was coached.
"I'm from a bygone era," he says. "When I played, you didn't get water during practice, because water made you soft. We lifted and conditioned very differently. We worked hard."
In many ways, that's still the formula. His program runs on hard work, preparation, and discipline, built on a verse from 1 Peter: respect everyone, love the brotherhood, fear God, honor authority. When his team jumps offside or picks up a personal foul, Brothers looks past the flag.
"Those are symptoms," he says. "The problem is we're not sticking to our foundation."
Unsurprisingly, Brothers doesn't do social media. In fact, he barely does technology at all.

HARD WORK, MEASURED
When PlayerData came calling, Brothers was intrigued by the idea of objectively knowing what his guys do on the field every time they step on it. That part was a no-brainer. But the most important aspect came down to one test: could a guy like him actually use it?
"I'm the old man who grew up without a cell phone," he says.
So he invited PlayerData in for a demo and found his answer. Setup was simple, from mapping out the fields onward. Brothers learned the basics himself, then handed the day-to-day to an assistant coach who digs into the reports. Brothers sticks to the overviews.
"It's user friendly, even for an archaic guy like me," he says. "I can sit down, look at the outputs, and know exactly what they're telling me."
Once the Eagles started using it, the data surprised him.
For Nashville Christian, Tuesdays are Tough Tuesdays, with live, best-on-best work. Wednesdays always looked lighter: no live action, just repping out the game plan. But running those reps over and over, the data revealed that his skill players were piling up high-intensity sprints on Wednesdays. Many of them play both ways, so they were coming off two hard days in a row with only 48 hours to recover before Friday night.
So Brothers changed how he structures those days.
"Now, we build substitution patterns around Wednesdays even," Brothers says. "Our starters are fresher on Friday, and our backups get valuable reps they never would have gotten. We're saving our guys and building our depth at the same time."
The players bought in too. They pull up their own numbers on their phones and trade sprint counts and mileage with teammates.
"You tell me you're working hard, and now the data shows me," Brothers says. "Our guys are super competitive. It just adds to that."
The hard work at Nashville Christian hasn't changed. Now Brothers can see it.
